Why The World Will Not End In 2012 - 5 Great Reasons

Essentially, I believe that the greatest concern regarding Mayan predictions is this date HAS to be the ending of the Mayan Long Count calendar. There were actually three different calendars for the ancient Mayans (social, religious, and the long count), but I will discuss these in depth in another hub.

The Long Count calendar is a calendar that, for the Mayans, represented an entire age that spanned over 5,000 years. This is not the first age. According to the Mayans, we are in the fourth age. At the end of this current Long Count calendar will be the end of the fourth age and the beginning of the fifth age.

One final note: it is not the fact that this Long Count calendar exists that is creating all this uproar, but rather the fact that after over 5000 years this calendar is coming to an END.

OK, look, if you are going to predict the end of the world, shouldn't you be able to also predict the end of your own empire?

Now, granted, the Mayans were amazing at mathematics and astrology. As a matter of fact, they correctly dated the 2012 Winter Solstice hundreds of years ago. I give them that - being able to accurately predict things like solar eclipses and such is not something that I could do today and yet they were doing it back then. That, my friends, is simply impressive!

However, they just disappeared. That is not impressive. So was it a plague or war? We really do not know what happened to them. This, of course, gives rise to the alien abduction belief, but I am not going to go there.

As I said before, this is not the first age - and therefore - not the first long count. So it stands to reason that since the Earth survived the end of the long count calendar for the first three ages, it certainly should survive this one.

However, according to the ancient Mayans, humans were not present during the first three ages... so I guess it is possible that humans may not be around for the next. Well, at least the Earth is sure to survive!

Tropical fossils have been found in Antarctica.

Scientists have found evidence of a polar switch some 400,000 years ago.  The Earth survived and so did life in general.  Granted, there will definitely be a lot of problems to face during a polar switch - especially if the poles interchange rapidly for a time like some say - but life is not so easy to exterminate.

Ever since hippies sang of the Age of Aquarius there has been talk of planetary alignment. This theory is that the Earth and the Sun will align with the center of the galaxy and this will create a cosmic "pull" that will at worst shred the Earth and at least cause major damage via earthquakes and tsunamis.

There is also some hype about all of the planets aligning for the first time in history... well, that just is not true.  Planetary alignment is just a phrase being thrown around without much truth to it.  According to NASA, there is no alignment in 2012.  NASA says that Earth will not even cross the galactic plane in 2012.  Actually, NASA does assert that the sun and Earth will align with the center of the galaxy in 2012... but that happens every year without any catastrophe!

First, I just owe way to much on my credit cards for the Earth to end before Citibank gets its due.  I just do not see it happening.

Furthermore, I have warranties on my car, laptop, and toaster oven that exceed December 2012.
